Nexium, the active ingredient in Prilosec, is a prescription drug used to treat frequent and severe GERD (i.e., persistent heartburn that occurs at least 4 or more days per week). The generic drug is not available in the U. S. under the brand name Prilosec.
The company has also entered into an agreement with Pfizer Inc. (the original manufacturer) to market the generic version of Nexium as Prilosec. Both parties agree that a generic version of Nexium is currently being marketed under the brand name Prilosec.
Nexium is indicated for the relief of frequent heartburn (occurs 4 or more days per week) in adults and children aged 4 years and older, occurring at least 4 or more days per week.
In its announcement, Pfizer said that the company will continue to sell Prilosec under the name Prilosec-T, the branded name for Prilosec.
For the company, Nexium is available as a single dose, four-week treatment. The prescription drug requires a 24-hour pass through the stomach.
